Trustee

Alex Margaritis

Alex’s experience as a property, commercial, and trust lawyer provides a strong foundation for effective governance.

Working across complex legal, commercial, and fiduciary matters has given Alex a deep understanding of risk, accountability, and long-term stewardship which are core responsibilities of a community trust board.

That professional background with a strategic mindset has naturally led to involvement with local charities, societies, and iwi, where he has supported organisations navigating governance challenges, asset management, and sustainable growth.

What motivated you to be involved with the Rātā Foundation Board?

I was motivated to be involved with the Rātā Foundation Board because of its focus on long-term, community-led impact. Rātā isn’t just funding projects; it’s backing people, relationships, and systems that strengthen communities over generations. That kind of stewardship really matters to me.

What are you most passionate about supporting in the community?

For me, no matter how big or small, supporting the community can create both direct and indirect benefits. Even small actions can generate positive change, and over time these efforts can build momentum that shapes stronger, healthier communities. The impact of community support doesn’t just help people today; it can create lasting, generational change. And you can see the results.

What is one of Rātā Foundations’ greatest achievements and/or projects?

One of the Rātā Foundation’s greatest achievements is the sheer scale and longevity of its impact as the South Island’s most significant community investor. That sustained investment has enabled thousands of initiatives that strengthen community wellbeing, remove barriers to participation, and support everything from education and health services to arts, culture and environmental work
