Strengthening the Sector
To understand the environmental challenges affecting communities, our Environment Sector Scan provides insights which guide our strategic investment and inform our responsive and proactive funding programmes.
By investing in opportunities that strengthen community organisations, those at the heart of their communities who see the challenges first-hand, are empowered to make a difference.
The report tells us that although the challenge presented by recurring climate events is significant, there is opportunity to strengthen the preparedness and resilience of community organisations in our funding rohe.
As part of our Strengthening the Sector programme, Rātā Foundation’s partnership with Terra Nova Foundation aims to do just that.
The Earth+ Resilience and Emissions Reduction Programme offers tailored support for not-for-profits looking to reduce emissions and prepare for the impacts of climate change. The programme encourages sharing of information and experiences, to create a network of ongoing support for those organisations embarking on their climate journey. You can read more about the programme in this contribution from Terra Nova Chief Executive Rose Challies.
At Rātā, we are seeing some great examples of meaningful collaborations between community organisations to achieve positive environmental outcomes.
Tasman Environmental Trust (TET) is a strategic project under Rātā Foundation’s Northern Region Environment initiative. As well as their own landscape-scale conservation projects, TET is a community hub providing support to other organisations in Te Tau Ihu. This support helps smaller organisations get started with their projects and accelerate progress towards their goals.
In Marlborough, Picton Dawn Chorus and Kāipūpū Sanctuary manage various conservation projects around Kaipūpū, a 40-hectare mainland sanctuary in the Marlborough Sounds.
The collaboration and subsequent merger of the two organisations under the Picton Dawn Chorus name, has helped to streamline their time and resources. You can read about the impact they’re having in our recent Faces of Funding story.
