About Us

Rātā Foundation, formerly The Canterbury Community Trust, established in 1988, is lead by a board of trustees who bring leadership and expertise across a wide range of disciplines.

As the South Island’s largest philanthropic funder, Rātā Foundation receives no income from other funders or gaming machines making it unique and independent in the region’s philanthropic community.

Over the last thirty-three years we have assisted hundreds of organisations through our community investment programme.  In 2021 we hit the milestone of distributing over $500 million in grants to support communities in need.  This equates to across our four funding regions - $386 million in Canterbury (including the Chatham Islands), $76 million in Nelson and $40 million in Marlborough.

Today, we are guardians of over $620 million endowment or putea, making around $20 million in grants per annum.
