Community Capacity Accounting - Costing and Budgeting

Training

Accounting is essential for any business – profit or not-for-profits. But not-for-profits have much higher accountability and reporting requirements, and are a lot more dependent on professional accounting services. Services that are prohibitively expensive and can be a large financial drain especially on smaller organisations.

CCA is a very special accounting firm: we specialise in not-for-profit organisations.

See here for some of the differences in for-profit and not-for-profit accounting.

‘Costing’ means to determine the true and complete cost of a specific project or item, while ‘budgeting’ generally refers to a forecast of incomings and outgoings over a specific period. Both involve a fair amount of crystal ball gazing, but there are some tools that can be used to make this meaningful.

One problem in costing is to arrive at a reasonable estimate for overheads incurred by the organisation through running the activity, i.e. indirect costs.

This workshop explains budget forecasting and reporting as well as ways to estimate indirect costs as they apply to a specific project. It is most useful for organisation managers, fundraisers or treasurers.
