Te Pataka O Wairau Night Market a hit

Māori language and heritage are at the heart of Blenheim night market- Te Pataka O Wairau.

The market came under the korowai of the three manawhenua Iwi of Ngati Rarua, Rangitane and Ngati Toa Rangatira of the Wairau rohe.

Dr Lorraine Eade, a member of the small organising committee, said the market was a true collaboration of the three Iwi, other funders and the committee.

"It signifies the importance of this kind of event to support the shared priorities of Iwi."

"The night market was a real opportunity to share Māori heritage and culture with the wider Marlborough community."

The evening lived up to its promise - with a variety of kai, cultural exhibitions and entertainment showcasing Māori contributions to this diverse community.

Dr Eade said the event provided some challenges for the small organising committee, but they were grateful for the support from funders to help get if off the ground.

"The key learning for us was the fact we underestimated public interest, running out of kai earlier than we anticipated.  Going forward we have factored this into our planning."

"Our aim is to make the next night market a key event on the Marlborough calendar."

The next market will be held  on 5 February 2019.
