Volunteer Marlborough - MoVERS Network July 2023 Engaging & Enabling those with disabilities & health conditions

Networking

MoVERS is open to anyone in a role involving the management, leadership, or coordination of volunteers in the Marlborough region.

At this month's MoVERS (Managers of Volunteers - Education, Resources, Sharing/Support) event...

In a study conducted by Carrie L. Shandra in US, it was identified that ableism is one of the most significant barriers to people with disabilities and health conditions participating in formal volunteering. On the one hand, organisations often choose applicants without disabilities or health conditions, rather than applications with those things, to fill certain roles without even fully considering whether the disability or health condition in question would have affected the applicant's ability to perform the role. On the other hand, organisations often don't know how to recruit for volunteers in a way that reaches people with disabilities and health conditions....or how to appropriately and effectively support them once they've been engaged.

This is incredibly unfortunate! Volunteering is positively correlated with happiness, self-esteem, mental wellbeing, and more.

We invite you to come along this month and take part in a round table discussion with representatives from the sector who work closely with individuals with disabilities and health conditions, to talk about how your organisation can engage more and engage effectively with those who want to get involved. It will also be a chance to learn a bit more about our Supported Volunteering Programme!

Come along and have a chat with representatives from:
