Sumner community garden flourishing

With summer in full swing, a community garden in Sumner is flourishing.

Sumner Bays Union Trust member Susan Kaschula said the Sumner community gardens, located on the grounds of the Van Asch Deaf Education Centre, was thriving.

“After the earthquake, Sumner was really shattered,” she said.

“So a lot of people focused on building things up, and the community garden was a great centre for that.”

The garden’s array of fruits, vegetables and herbs were tended to by volunteers in the Sumner Community.

“This, we’ve found, is a great place to being members of the community together from all walks of life, from all age groups,” she said.

“We work together in great harmony and pleasure seeing things grow and develop.”

She said the trust was “grateful” for the continued support of Rātā Foundation.
