Marlborough Youth Trust giving young people a voice

For almost two decades, the Marlborough Youth Trust has given young people the chance to have their say.

The trust, established in 2000, provides a space of youths to develop their skills, voice ideas, discover services and take part in youth-focused events.

Marlborough Youth Trust manager Jo Lane said MYT allowed youth to take the lead.

“We supply events to young people. We do six key events throughout the year,” she said.

“We’ve also got 20 young people aged 14 to 24 on our youth advisory group, and they advise us and let us know in regards to consultation what they’d like to be seeing happening in Marlborough.”

She said funding from places like Rātā Foundation helped the trust continue to provide its services, including funding a new youth development centre.

Blenheim police constable Dean Buckley, who was on the MYT board, said the youth development centre would be an asset to the region.

“Basically, it’s a place for all youth of Marlborough to come to hang out, to do programmes, education, all sorts of stuff,” he said.

“The great thing about the Marlborough Youth Trust is its longevity; it’s been in Marlborough for a long time and we’ve had great successes through our programmes.”

“Personally, the young people that I’ve seen come through, their lives have been turned around.”
