He Waka Tapu providing much-needed services

It can be difficult to reach out for help – but staff at He Waka Tapu make taking that first step easier.

He Waka Tapu provides physical, mental, spiritual and family well-being services.

The services are delivered using a Kaupapa Māori framework.

He Waka Tapu chief executive Jackie Burrows said the organisation helps people from all walks of life.

“He Waka Tapu has a reach of over 2500 people every year individually. That means some may come back through, but we actually see 2500 people,” she said.

She said He Waka Tapu’s services were valuable to members of the community.

“They come across our services to look at our different programmes we have available. These include suicide prevention, domestic and family violence, we have alcohol and drug services including residential, covering the southern region of New Zealand.”
